Prostate and liver cancers are leading causes of death in Ghana, with prostate cancer mortality at 52 percent and liver cancer at 90 percent. The GHS urges regular screenings and healthy lifestyle choices to combat rising cancer rates. Survivors and health professionals stress the need for support and government intervention to improve cancer treatment affordability.

Prostate and liver cancers are identified as significant contributors to mortality in Ghana, according to the Ghana Health Service (GHS). In 2022, the country recorded 2,395 cases of prostate cancer resulting in 1,233 deaths, indicating a 52 percent mortality rate. Liver cancer diagnoses reached 2,656 among males, leading to 2,390 deaths, which is an alarming 90 percent mortality rate. Overall, 27,385 new cancer cases were reported, resulting in 17,944 deaths, alongside 63,764 survivors who overcame the disease.

In Ghana, the prevalence of cancers, specifically prostate and liver cancers, is a pressing health concern. With the rising numbers of diagnoses and related mortality, the GHS warns against complacency and emphasizes the importance of regular check-ups. Through efforts such as awareness campaigns and preventive health measures, the GHS aims to encourage early detection and effective treatment of cancers among the population. The statistics highlight the need for increased public health initiatives.

The GHS strongly advocates for regular cancer screenings to facilitate early detection and treatment. Raising public awareness through education on healthy lifestyles and the importance of vaccinations against Hepatitis A and B is crucial. Engaging the community, including survivors and caregivers, is essential to transforming cancer care and addressing the challenges faced by patients. Together, these efforts form the backbone of a vital campaign to combat cancer morbidity and mortality in Ghana.
