Nigeria Calls for Investigation into Abubakar Lawal’s Death in Uganda

The Acting Nigerian High Commissioner to Uganda, Ambassador Shama Shanga, has requested a full autopsy and thorough inquiry into the incident.
Dabiri-Erewa described the situation as ‘pathetic and suspicious,’ insisting on a complete investigation without any cover-up. She extended her condolences, emphasizing the need for transparency in the investigation while wishing peace for Lawal’s family. The Kajjansi Police Division in Uganda has begun analyzing the circumstances of Lawal’s death, which reportedly occurred after he fell from the third floor of the Voicemall Shopping Arcade on February 24, 2025.
Preliminary findings indicate that Lawal, a professional footballer with Vipers Sports Club and a final-year student at Cavendish University, had come to the shopping mall to meet a friend, Omary Naima. According to Naima, she left Lawal in a hotel room preparing tea before he fell from the balcony around 8:00 AM. After the fall, Lawal was transported to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Authorities have recovered several personal items from Lawal’s black backpack, including two smartphones, a pair of sandals, headsets, a training kit, and chargers. The investigation is continuing with efforts to acquire CCTV footage and conduct interviews to clarify the events leading to his tragic death.
