Motorists have recounted instances of vandalism aimed at discouraging non-payment. “If we refuse to pay, they hit our vehicles with sticks and/or stones. I saw one driver try to pass without paying, and he had his side window smashed,” stated driver Alberto Massango. Faced with threats, many motorists feel compelled to comply with these demands to prevent damage to their cars.

In addition to the roadblock situations, thefts from vehicles have also been reported. Passengers in public transport are targeted, losing personal belongings like smartphones due to quick and stealthy theft. “I’ve seen a passenger lose his cell phone. They’re quick and, before you know it, they’ve disappeared into the trash,” mentioned local resident Isabel Zimba.

It seems like they’re afraid or simply ignore these criminal acts,” expressed motorcycle taxi driver Zacarias Sitoe.
