On February 26, 2025, a group of Chinese doctors performed cataract surgeries in Harare, Zimbabwe, as part of the newly launched “Bright Journey” program. The initiative has restored vision to numerous patients, including 80-year-old Mariya Sangare, who expressed joy at her regained sight. The program, which offers free cataract surgeries, aims to help 600 Zimbabweans overcome preventable blindness caused by cataracts.

The initiative, carried out by twelve specialists from China’s Hunan Provincial People’s Hospital, commenced on February 12. Cosmas Chipengo, a 25-year-old patient who underwent surgery, expressed gratitude for the program that alleviated financial burdens often associated with medical expenses.

Zimbabwe’s Minister of Health, Douglas Mombeshora, highlighted the public health significance of addressing preventable blindness. This year marks important anniversaries of diplomatic and medical cooperation, and the ambassador noted that the initiative also aids in enhancing local medical training.
