Rofiat Lawal, a corps member from Oyo State, was kidnapped on the Benin-Ore Expressway while returning to her primary assignment. The abductors reportedly demand a ransom of N20 million. The NYSC has been alerted, and her family seeks public assistance amid financial hardships.
A National Youth Service Corps member, Rofiat Lawal, was kidnapped along the Benin-Ore Expressway while returning to her primary assignment in Ogbomosho from Benin, Edo State. The incident occurred on Tuesday, as reported on Facebook by user Agbakwara, who mentioned that the abductors are demanding a ransom of N20 million for her release.
Agbakwara detailed the circumstances of Lawal’s abduction, highlighting her struggles to support herself through university and her family’s financial difficulties. She described how Lawal was en route on a bus when she was taken and emphasized the dire situation faced by her family, who cannot afford the ransom. They have reached out for assistance, appealing for support to raise awareness about the kidnapping.
The Oyo State NYSC Coordinator, Odoba Oche, confirmed the kidnapping and noted that security agencies have been notified for appropriate action. He mentioned that the parents reported the incident to NYSC, and emphasized the need for corps members to inform authorities before traveling, especially to avoid night journeys. Oche stated, “We were not aware of the incident before her parents reported it.”
Rofiat Lawal’s kidnapping highlights the ongoing issue of insecurity in Nigeria, specifically targeting individuals traveling on vulnerable roads. The demand for a substantial ransom raises concerns about the welfare of her family, while the NYSC’s plea for proactive measures may prevent future incidents. Community support and immediate action from authorities are crucial in addressing such incidents.
