Rising levels of the Incomáti River threaten transport in Mozambique, particularly the N1 road connecting Maputo to Gaza. Heavy rains have flooded homes and agricultural fields in the Magude district. Authorities are monitoring the hydrological situations across multiple basins and advising precautions for residents near the rivers.

The connection between Maputo province and the rest of Mozambique is threatened by significant flooding due to rising levels of the Incomáti River in the Incoluane area. Heavy rains upstream are causing the river to approach the height of the National Road Number One (N1), which is crucial for transport between Maputo and Gaza provinces.

Óscar Sibia, director of the Incomáti Basin Management Division at the Southern Water Regional Administration (ARA-Sul), reported to “Notícias” that the flooding has affected homes and agricultural areas in the Magude district. Authorities are currently monitoring the situation and assessing the damage caused by the rising waters.

The ARA-Sul Hydrological Bulletin has indicated that the hydrological levels in the Maputo, Limpopo, Madubula, Combomune, Chókwè, and Sicacate basins are fluctuating but remain above alert levels. Specifically, an increase has been noted in the Limpopo basin, while Macarretane’s levels remain below jeopardy.

Due to ongoing rainfall and runoff from upstream sources, the hydrological scenario in these basins is expected to worsen over the next 24 hours. Authorities urge the population to exercise caution near the Maputo, Incomáti, and Limpopo rivers to avoid risks associated with strong currents.

Public safety remains a priority as ARA-Sul continues to advise citizens to monitor the hydrological information provided by relevant authorities closely, ensuring they are well-prepared for any further developments in the situation.

The Incomáti River’s rising levels pose a significant risk to transportation and infrastructure in Mozambique, particularly affecting the essential N1 road connecting Maputo to Gaza. Authorities are actively monitoring the situation, emphasizing public safety as community flood impacts increase. Vigilance regarding hydrological reports is essential to mitigate risks for residents living near affected waterways.
