Kenya Airways has suspended flights to Mauritius due to Tropical Cyclone Garance. The closure of the main airport and severe weather, including strong winds and heavy rainfall, has led to significant disruptions. KQ prioritizes customer safety and will keep flights suspended until normal conditions resume.

Kenya Airways (KQ) has announced the suspension of flights to Mauritius due to deteriorating weather conditions associated with the impending tropical cyclone, Garance. The Mauritius Meteorological Service (MMS) has issued a Class 3 cyclone warning for both Mauritius and La Reunion, indicating severe weather expected to impact the region by Thursday evening or Friday morning with gale-force winds and heavy rainfall.

As a result of the cyclone, the main airport in Mauritius, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU), has temporarily closed, stranding many travelers. KQ stated that flights would remain suspended indefinitely until conditions stabilize. The airline emphasized that customer safety is their top priority, apologizing for any inconvenience caused.

The MMS reported that winds are predicted to blow from the northeast at approximately 40 km/h, with gusts reaching 100 km/h. Additionally, the cyclone could create dangerous sea conditions with waves up to 7 meters. A Class 3 cyclone signifies wind speeds of 120-165 km/h, posing threats to infrastructure and transportation, as well as endangering flight operations.

In summary, Kenya Airways has suspended flights to Mauritius due to the severe weather forecast associated with Cyclone Garance. This decision follows a Class 3 cyclone warning, which involves strong winds, heavy rain, and dangerous sea conditions. The airport’s closure has disrupted many travelers, highlighting the airline’s commitment to passenger safety and operational integrity amid these adverse weather circumstances.
