She shared details about this upcoming event on Vicki Notaro’s podcast, saying, “We had a little engagement party in Dublin. So I thought the whole thing was done. But then my mam calls me up and she wants to throw us a whole traditional engagement.”
Mia elaborated on the significance of traditional engagements in Burundi, stating, “I would have grown up going to these traditional engagements. The traditional engagement there is way bigger than the white wedding.” The festivities will feature Burundian drummers, dancers, and traditional attire, emphasizing the cultural richness of the celebration.
Daragh Curran is looking forward to this trip as it will be his first visit to Burundi and, indeed, to Africa. Mia mentioned, “Daragh has never been to Burundi, he’s never been to Africa in his life,” adding that her family is eager to meet him and noting the cultural differences he will experience as “the only white person there.”
Looking ahead to their wedding, Mia shared that they are planning a destination wedding with friends and family who are able to travel. However, she clarified that this event is not immediate, interpreting the traditional engagement as the first challenge they will face as a couple.
