Mauritius Airport Reopens After Storm Garance, Passengers Advised to Stay Away

Mauritius’ Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport has reopened after Tropical Storm Garance, but passengers are advised against visiting the airport. Severe conditions triggered warnings, and flight statuses should be confirmed directly with airlines. Dangerous weather conditions are still present, with improvements expected soon.
Mauritius’ main international airport, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, has reopened following the impact of Tropical Storm Garance. Despite the reopening, passengers are strongly advised to avoid the airport and consult with their airlines regarding flight statuses, as safety measures are still in place due to residual threats from the storm. Access to the terminal will be restricted to only those departing with valid tickets.
The storm, which made landfall on February 28, was the most intense to strike Mauritius since 1989, with wind speeds reaching up to 100 mph. The UK Foreign Office issued updated guidance in light of the severe conditions. The airport had been closed since 7 PM local time on February 26, as authorities prepared for the storm’s arrival.
France’s meteorological agency reported that Garance also affected Reunion Island, bringing wind gusts of 103 mph and prompting a purple cyclone warning, indicating the highest level of alert. Authorities warned of dangerous conditions, including heavy rainfall and strong waves, expected to continue into Friday, with improvements anticipated by Saturday, March 1.
The reopening of Mauritius’ airport post-Tropical Storm Garance carries safety advisories for travelers. Passengers should refrain from visiting the airport unless they have confirmed departures and adhere to updates from local authorities. The storm’s impact highlights the need for caution as clean-up and recovery efforts continue over the coming days.
