Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Sachet’ Delivers Aid to Sudan and Djibouti

The Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Sachet’ embarked on a mission to Sudan, carrying over two tons of essential medicines, including anti-cancer treatments. This initiative aims to provide humanitarian assistance to those affected by the ongoing conflict in the region, underscoring India’s commitment to international solidarity. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted this effort in a statement regarding the ship’s departure.

On the same day, the Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Sachet’ also set sail for Djibouti, transporting substantial medical aid that includes 20 hemodialysis machines and a reverse osmosis plant. This dual mission reflects a broader humanitarian effort by India to support nations in crisis, particularly addressing healthcare shortages in conflict-affected areas.

Since the outbreak of conflict in Sudan in April 2023, over 25 million individuals across Sudan, South Sudan, and Chad face worsening food insecurity, with 17 million at risk in Sudan alone. The United Nations reports that this crisis could escalate into one of the worst hunger emergencies globally, necessitating humanitarian interventions such as India’s medical aid initiatives.

In addition to the aid sent to Sudan, India has been active in providing humanitarian assistance elsewhere. Last month, a consignment of 26 tons of medical supplies and disaster relief was dispatched to Honduras following Tropical Storm SARA. This included surgical supplies, glucometers, hygiene kits, and other essential items, demonstrating India’s readiness to assist vulnerable populations globally.

Previously, on January 27, India sent vital medical supplies to the Kurdistan region of Iraq, which comprised bronchodilators, inhalers, and ventilators. This consistent support, initiated following a UN appeal, reflects India’s ongoing commitment to humanitarian assistance, with a historical contribution of USD 20 million to Iraq since 2003.

The departure of the Indian Coast Guard Ship ‘Sachet’ to Sudan, alongside its mission to Djibouti, highlights India’s proactive stance in providing humanitarian assistance amidst global crises. The country continues to extend support through medical aid underlining the urgency of addressing health and food security for affected populations in regions like Sudan, Honduras, and Iraq.
