Snowfall Predicted in Morocco Amid Ongoing Recovery Efforts from Earthquake

Morocco forecasts snowfall of 5 to 15 centimeters in several provinces, especially at elevations over 1,800 meters. The alert comes as regions recover from a devastating earthquake in September that killed over 3,000 and injured thousands more. The government has allocated significant resources to support rebuilding efforts, particularly in Al Haouz, where many families still face hardship due to extreme weather conditions.
A new orange level weather alert has been issued in Morocco as snowfall is expected to impact multiple provinces, particularly those at elevations over 1,800 meters. Provinces such as Azilal, Beni Mellal, Midelt, Tinghir, Ouarzazate, and Al Haouz will likely see snowfall accumulation of 10 to 15 centimeters on Monday and Tuesday. Meanwhile, Ifrane, Boulemane, Taroudant, and Chichaoua anticipate 5 to 10 centimeters of snow during the same timeframe.
The imminent snowfall comes amidst ongoing concerns for the residents of Al Haouz, an area still recovering from a catastrophic earthquake in September 2023, which resulted in extensive casualties and property damage. Distressing videos circulating online depict the hardships faced by these communities, including heavy snow accumulation on makeshift shelters.
Following the earthquake, which claimed over 3,000 lives and left thousands more injured, the Moroccan government established a fund to assist recovery efforts. To date, around 56,000 families affected by the disaster have received financial aid aimed at rebuilding their homes, with rehabilitation efforts showing a 95% completion rate, funded by approximately MAD 1.4 billion.
Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch noted that more than 53,000 construction permits have been issued to affected families, which covers about 90% of the surveyed population in the Al Haouz region and surrounding provinces. This effort is part of the broader strategy to aid in the reconstruction process post-earthquake, preparing the region for challenging winter conditions.
In summary, Morocco anticipates significant snowfall in multiple provinces, particularly affecting those recovering from a severe earthquake. As the government continues to support reconstruction efforts, the combination of harsh weather and ongoing vulnerabilities raises concerns for the residents, particularly in Al Haouz. Recovery initiatives appear to be progressing, with substantial financial support and permitting efforts ongoing.
