Philip Pariyo, a Ugandan rugby international, has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for the rape of a woman in Cardiff. This verdict was handed down by Cardiff Crown Court following a trial where Pariyo was found guilty in December 2024 despite his continuous denial of the charges. The incident occurred in June 2021 after Pariyo had developed a friendship with the victim.

Pariyo, 32, previously represented Uganda in the Rugby Sevens at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow before seeking asylum in the UK. After reportedly disappearing post-Games, he settled in Cardiff and allegedly became involved in local rugby while working for Cardiff Council. His asylum claim was reportedly based on fears of persecution due to his sexual orientation in Uganda, where homosexuality is illegal.
