Shooting Incident During Trinidad and Tobago Carnival Leaves One Dead and Four Injured

A shooting during Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival resulted in one fatality and four injuries. The deceased was 30-year-old Irvin Joaquin Mayora. A 61-year-old man reportedly shot at an attacker, inadvertently hitting bystanders. The incident is under investigation amid a current State of Emergency in the country.
During Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival celebrations, a shooting occurred along Western Main Road in St. James, resulting in one death and four injuries, including a US citizen. The deceased, 30-year-old Irvin Joaquin Mayora, was a Venezuelan national. The injured victims included individuals from Diego Martin, St James, Maraval, and Maryland, USA.
Police reports indicate that a 61-year-old man from Carapichaima was confronted by an attacker while walking on the road. Fearing for his safety, the man drew a firearm and discharged it, unintentionally hitting four bystanders. Mayora collapsed shortly after fleeing the scene. The shooter cooperated with law enforcement, and his firearm was confiscated.
All four victims received medical attention at St. James District Hospital. One casualty, a 25-year-old from St. James, was later transferred to Port of Spain General Hospital and is in serious condition. The other victims are reported to be stable. Investigating officers processed the scene, collecting eleven spent 9mm casings.
While speculation surrounds Mayora’s potential involvement as the attacker, police have yet to confirm this. As of Wednesday morning, clarity on the licensing status of the shooter’s firearm remains unverified. WPC Clarke is undertaking further investigations into the incident. This shooting occurred shortly after a ‘confidence walk’ led by Minister of National Security Fitzgerald Hinds, emphasizing that previous Carnival activities had been relatively safe with minimal incidents.
The nation is currently operating under a State of Emergency, which grants enhanced powers to police and the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, although no curfew is presently enforced. Further updates are anticipated soon.
The Carnival celebrations in Trinidad and Tobago were overshadowed by a tragic shooting incident that left one dead and four injured. The quick actions of the authorities have led to initial investigations, but many questions remain unanswered. This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of maintaining public safety during large gatherings, even as law enforcement reassures citizens about overall safety measures in place.
