Morocco Reports Continued Decline in Measles Cases ‘Bouhmroun’

Morocco reports a steady decrease in measles cases, with a 13% drop in new cases noted in a recent week. The improvement is linked to healthcare initiatives and public involvement in vaccination campaigns. Despite progress, the Ministry stresses the importance of continued vigilance and has extended the vaccination campaign until March 28.
The Moroccan Ministry of Health has reported a consistent decline in new measles cases, termed “Bouhmroun”, marking five consecutive weeks of decrease. This trend is attributed to proactive measures aimed at controlling the viral outbreak. From February 24 to March 2, there was a 13% reduction in cases, bringing the total count to 2,481, following a previous decrease of 14.9% with 2,863 cases identified.
The improvement is credited to the collective efforts of healthcare workers, effective stakeholder coordination, and increased public participation in vaccination initiatives related to the ongoing national vaccination status verification. In light of this progress, the ministry has decided to extend its vaccination campaign until March 28, ensuring that families can access vital vaccines.
While the drop in reported cases is promising, the Ministry emphasized the need for continued vigilance, particularly due to varying vaccination rates across different provinces. Citizens are urged to actively participate in the national measles combat campaign and recognize the critical role vaccinations play in preventing the disease and its potential complications.
Health Minister Amine Tahraoui mentioned that since October 2023, Morocco has documented a total of 19,515 cases of Bouhmroun, resulting in 107 fatalities, constituting 0.55% of cases. The minister highlighted that approximately half of these deaths involved children under the age of 12, underscoring the heightened vulnerability of younger demographics.
Morocco has experienced a significant decrease in measles cases, attributed to effective healthcare efforts and public participation. The vaccination campaign has been extended to ensure comprehensive coverage. Ongoing vigilance is essential due to disparities in vaccination rates across provinces. The Health Minister emphasizes the pressing need for vaccinations, particularly among children, to mitigate the associated health risks.
