In Tanzania, as Muslims celebrate Ramadan and Christians observe Lent, fasting poses a formidable challenge amidst a heatwave. Dehydration risks are heightened due to soaring temperatures, especially in regions like Dar es Salaam, Tanga, and Kilimanjaro. Experts stress the importance of strategic hydration throughout non-fasting hours to combat heat-related issues effectively.

Dr. Kantamla Mafuru from the Tanzania Meteorological Agency indicates that excessive sweating in high temperatures leads to fluid loss, resulting in symptoms such as muscle cramps and dizziness. To mitigate this, he advises an increased water intake during non-fasting hours and consuming water-rich fruits like watermelon to maintain hydration.

Furthermore, he recommends avoiding prolonged periods of outdoor work and seeking shade when possible. Utilizing fans and cooling devices can also aid in regulating body temperature during this extreme heat.

Dr. Gambo, the Northern Zone Health and Nutrition Coordinator, advises fasting individuals to stay in shaded areas, minimizing direct sun exposure. At home, cooling methods such as taking baths can help lower body temperature, while workplaces should ensure airflow through open windows or air conditioning.

During iftar, it is crucial to begin with foods that promote enzyme production, such as porridge or dates. Following a long day of fasting and heat exposure, gentle consumption of these foods aids the body’s nutritional needs.

Fatma Mwasora, a Senior Nutrition Officer at Tumbi Region Referral Hospital, emphasizes the need to include fruits and vegetables in meals while limiting salt and spices, which increase thirst. Caffeine and nicotine should also be consumed cautiously, as they can heighten dehydration.

Additionally, avoiding strenuous activities during peak temperatures is essential, as this can exacerbate health issues such as dizziness or nausea. An effective combination of hydration and a balanced diet can help fasting individuals maintain good health while honoring their spiritual commitments.
