Kenya Faces Flash Flood Threat as Heavy Rains Forecasted

Regions such as Nairobi, Kiambu, and Marsabit will experience increased rainfall, with intensification expected on Sunday, potentially exceeding 30mm in a 24-hour period. This weather pattern may spread to northwestern Kenya by Monday, March 10, 2025.

Additional forecasts suggest that the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and highland areas on either side of the Rift Valley will see over 20mm of rain within the same time frame. Heavy rainfall in these areas could be particularly intense, with warnings indicating significant accumulation over the weekend.

Residents in prone areas are advised to avoid seeking shelter under trees or close to windows due to lightning risks. The anticipated heavy rainfall is also expected to affect regions such as Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Homa Bay, and Kisumu.

Other counties at risk include Bungoma, Baringo, Nakuru, and Uasin Gishu, among others. Officials in Nairobi have urged individuals living near riverbanks to move at least 30 meters away to mitigate flood risks as the rainy season commences. Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria emphasized the importance of keeping drainage areas clear to prevent flooding issues.

Mosiria stated that residents should ensure local drainage remains free of debris, and he warned against the dumping of waste along roads, which can exacerbate flooding. Authorities stress the importance of adhering to safety recommendations during this period of heavy rainfall, as risks escalate due to the anticipated weather conditions.

The heavy rainfall forecasted across various counties in Kenya poses a significant risk for flash floods. Residents, especially in flood-prone areas, should take precautionary measures by relocating away from riverbanks and ensuring drainage systems are clear of debris.
