Collins Letting created an unauthorized police station at Cherus Centre in Kesses, Uasin Gishu, misleading residents for over six months. The station operated without the Inspector-General’s approval, significantly raising safety concerns within the community. Ongoing investigations aim to address these issues and restore public trust in local law enforcement.

Police in Uasin Gishu have come under scrutiny after Collins Letting, a trader and political activist, created an unauthorized police station at Cherus Centre in Kesses. This facility, painted in police colors, operated for over six months without approval from the Inspector-General. Letting, known as Chepkulei, established the patrol base to enforce regulations against unlicensed timber logging from nearby Cengalo Forest.

Local residents were unaware of the station’s illegality; even the area chief, responsible for local governance, did not know. The police uncovered the structure on March 8, detailing in their report that it was fully equipped and operational without any official authorization. According to the National Police Service Act 2014, only the Inspector-General holds the authority to create such establishments in Kenya.

It remains unclear why Letting opted to establish this police-like facility, although his connections with influential figures misled residents into believing it was legitimate. A local resident noted, “I am shocked to learn this was not a legitimate police station. If this is where we have reached, then as civilians we are not safe.”

Uasin Gishu County police commander Benjamin Mwanthi has assured residents that investigations are underway to determine the motives behind this misleading establishment. He confirmed that a security team would be visiting the village to gather more information and meet with locals to address their concerns regarding safety and security related to this incident.

The establishment of an unauthorized police station by Collins Letting in Uasin Gishu raises serious concerns about public safety and governance. Local authorities failed to recognize the illegitimacy of this facility for over six months, misleading the community. As investigations unfold, police are committed to restoring confidence in local security and addressing the underlying issues that allowed this situation to occur.
