Gumbo, aged 31, was part of a group using metal detectors and a mattock to prospect for gold at the mine. A security guard, Gift Tashinga Mandeya, attempted to intervene but was ignored as the group continued its activities near a slime dam.
Mandeya subsequently alerted Zhian, who allegedly armed himself and fired shots at the miners. Gumbo sustained a gunshot wound to the forehead and was rushed to Gwanda Provincial Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Following the incident, Yang Zhian faced the court and was remanded in custody until March 21 as investigations are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
