The shooting occurred on a Monday when an officer from the Maitumbi Police Station allegedly shot a resident named Sani in the Angwan-Kaje area of Chanchaga Local Government, reportedly while under the influence of alcohol. Witnesses reported that the officer, whose name has not been disclosed, consumed excessive alcohol before beginning to shoot randomly with his service rifle.
One witness reported that Sani was fatally struck while in the vicinity, and there was a near miss involving another individual, Mai Shayi, who was targeted but managed to escape. The witness described how the officer shot unlawfully, with shell casings found at the scene of the crime.
Wasiu Abiodun, the spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating that the police command received reports of the shooting early on Monday morning.
