Kenya is set to experience moderate rainfall and high temperatures in the upcoming week, with light rainfall expected in western regions. The Kenya Meteorological Department predicts potential isolated heavy rainfall and afternoon thunderstorms. Central Kenya will have milder temperatures below 20 °C, while some areas may exceed 32 °C, with elevated heat stress warnings in eastern counties. A seasonal forecast shows both dry and wet conditions anticipated in different regions of East Africa.

Kenya anticipates moderate rainfall and elevated temperatures across different regions over the next week, with neighboring nations experiencing above-average precipitation. The Igad Climate Predictions and Applications Center (ICPAC) provided a weekly forecast for March 12 to March 19, predicting light rainfall below 50 mm in western Kenya. This light rainfall also extends to southern and western Uganda, most of South Sudan, and certain areas of Ethiopia and northern Tanzania.

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has also cautioned about rainfall across most regions, including the likelihood of isolated heavy downpours. In their forecast from March 11 to March 17, KMD noted that the Highlands East of the Rift Valley—comprising Nairobi, Murang’a, and Kiambu Counties—will experience morning rains, with drier conditions predicted midweek and rain resuming towards the end of the forecast.

Afternoon and nighttime showers along with thunderstorms are expected intermittently, although rainfall intensity might decrease midway through the forecast before increasing again. High temperatures surpassing 32 °C are expected in certain areas, including eastern South Sudan, western Ethiopia, and northwestern Kenya, as reported by IGAD.

Certain regions in central Kenya, particularly Nairobi and Kiambu, along with Nakuru, Busia, and Eldoret, are forecasted to have milder temperatures below 20 °C within the next week. The ICPAC warned that counties in eastern Kenya, such as Makueni, Machakos, and Taita Taveta, are at risk of experiencing elevated heat stress.

For the March-April-May seasonal forecast, drier-than-usual conditions are expected across Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, western Uganda, South Sudan, and northwestern Tanzania. Conversely, wetter conditions are predicted for western and southwestern Kenya, eastern Uganda, eastern South Sudan, western Ethiopia, and much of Tanzania.

The recent forecasts indicate Kenya will face moderate rainfall and high temperatures in various regions. Light rainfall below 50 mm is expected mainly in western Kenya, while certain areas will encounter high temperatures exceeding 32 °C. The KMD also warns of potential elevated heat stress in eastern counties, with drier than average conditions projected in numerous areas for the upcoming seasonal forecast.
