Tropical Cyclone Jude Claims Lives and Displaces Thousands in Mozambique and Malawi

Tropical Cyclone Jude has claimed nine lives across Mozambique (six) and Malawi (three), displacing thousands and causing severe flooding. Relief efforts are hindered by damaged infrastructure. Last December, Cyclone Chido caused similar devastation in the region.
Tropical Cyclone Jude has resulted in the confirmed deaths of at least nine individuals across Mozambique and Malawi. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique reported six fatalities, 20 injuries, and the displacement of 9,525 people, primarily in Nampula and Niasa provinces as well as Zambezia province in central Mozambique.
In Malawi, three additional deaths were reported, accompanied by the displacement of 20,000 residents in the southern region due to severe flooding. Chiphiliro Khamula, a spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) in Malawi, indicated that those affected are receiving shelter in evacuation centers.
The cyclone initially struck northern Mozambique early on a Sunday before moving toward southern Malawi, leading to significant flooding from Monday through Wednesday. Relief efforts have been significantly delayed due to the destruction of roads and bridges, as highlighted by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
This disaster follows a recent occurrence last December, when Cyclone Chido impacted both countries, resulting in the deaths of 73 individuals in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi.
Tropical Cyclone Jude has had a devastating impact on Mozambique and Malawi, claiming at least nine lives and displacing thousands. Relief operations face major challenges due to infrastructural damage. The ongoing plight underscores the recurring threat of cyclones in the region, as seen with the earlier Cyclone Chido which caused significant casualties. Immediate and coordinated relief efforts are crucial to address the aftermath of such natural disasters.
