Tropical Cyclone Jude has claimed nine lives, with six deaths reported in Mozambique and three in Malawi. Over 29,500 people have been displaced, facing severe flooding in southern Malawi. Relief operations face difficulties due to damaged infrastructure.

Tropical Cyclone Jude has resulted in at least nine fatalities across Mozambique and Malawi. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Mozambique reported that six people died, 20 were injured, and over 9,525 have been displaced in the northern provinces of Nampula and Niasa, as well as in Zambezia province. In Malawi, the cyclone claimed three lives and left around 20,000 individuals homeless due to severe flooding in the southern region.

Chiphiliro Khamula, a spokesperson for Malawi’s Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), indicated that those affected are currently being accommodated in evacuation centers. The cyclone made landfall in northern Mozambique early Sunday, subsequently impacting southern Malawi with heavy flooding that persisted from Monday through Wednesday.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that relief efforts are significantly hindered by the destruction of roads and bridges, making access challenging. This disaster follows Cyclone Chido, which struck the same regions in December of the previous year, resulting in 73 deaths in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi.

Tropical Cyclone Jude has caused significant loss of life and displacement in Mozambique and Malawi, with multiple casualties and thousands affected by flooding. The challenges faced by relief teams due to damaged infrastructure highlight the ongoing vulnerability of these regions to severe weather events. Continued support and coordination are essential for recovery efforts in the aftermath of this cyclone.
