Tropical Cyclone Jude Delivers Fatal Blow to Mozambique and Malawi

Tropical Cyclone Jude has caused at least nine deaths and displaced thousands in Mozambique and Malawi. Relief operations are hindered by infrastructure damage. The regions remain vulnerable to severe weather events, as demonstrated by previous disasters.
Tropical Cyclone Jude has resulted in at least nine fatalities across Mozambique and Malawi. In Mozambique, the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) reported six deaths, 20 injuries, and approximately 9,525 individuals displaced, particularly in the provinces of Nampula, Niasa, and Zambezia.
In Malawi, reports indicate that three deaths occurred and over 20,000 people have been displaced in the southern region due to extensive flooding caused by the cyclone. According to Chiphiliro Khamula, a representative of the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), displaced individuals are currently being accommodated in evacuation centers.
The cyclone impacted northern Mozambique on a Sunday and subsequently hit southern Malawi, leading to severe flooding from Monday through Wednesday. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has stated that emergency relief efforts are being obstructed due to damaged roads and bridges.
This disaster follows a previous cyclone, Chido, which struck the region in December, resulting in the death of 73 individuals in Mozambique and 13 in Malawi, illustrating the ongoing vulnerability of these areas to extreme weather events.
Tropical Cyclone Jude has severely affected Mozambique and Malawi, causing at least nine deaths and displacing thousands. Relief efforts are challenged by infrastructure damage. This highlights the continual threat of cyclones in these regions, as seen in the previous cyclone, Chido, which caused significant fatalities as well.
