Gloria Nobre, treasurer of Venancio Mondlane, is illegally detained in Maputo without access to family or lawyers. Detained by plainclothes officers without a warrant, her health condition raises concerns. Legal representatives from the Centre for Democracy and Human Rights face obstruction in accessing her, prompting plans for a formal complaint to authorities.

Gloria Nobre, treasurer for Mozambique’s former presidential candidate, Venancio Mondlane, is reportedly being held illegally at a police station in Maputo. She lacks access to her family and legal representation following her detention on Wednesday, which occurred without an arrest warrant.

Nobre, aged 59, was apprehended by plainclothes police officers while with her daughter, Alina, in Alto Mae. The officers displayed a document on their cellphone but did not provide any reason for her detention. Alina expressed concern for her mother’s health, noting her conditions of high blood pressure and asthma.

Efforts to secure legal assistance for Nobre have been thwarted, as the family’s lawyer was denied entry to see her. The Centre for Democracy and Human Rights (CDD) has appointed three lawyers to assist but reports that police are blocking their access as well. The CDD intends to file a complaint with the Attorney-General’s Office regarding the violation of Nobre’s rights.

According to anonymous sources from the Criminal Investigation Service (Sernic), Nobre is barred from seeing family or lawyers for 48 hours due to an ongoing investigation, further complicating her situation.

The detention of Gloria Nobre highlights significant concerns regarding human rights and legal processes in Mozambique. Without appropriate legal assistance and a clear reason for her arrest, the unfolding situation raises alarms over the treatment of individuals in custody. The involvement of human rights organizations and legal professionals underlines the urgency for accountability and transparency in Nobre’s case.
