The IOM is providing 2,800 emergency kits to Cyclone Jude victims in Mozambique, which has claimed lives and injured many. The cyclone has severely affected infrastructure and triggered urgent support needs, emphasizing the country’s vulnerability to extreme weather events due to climate change.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) will distribute 2,800 emergency kits to victims of Tropical Cyclone Jude in Mozambique’s Zambézia and Nampula provinces. Announced on Friday, this initiative aims to assist those affected by the cyclone, highlighting IOM’s ongoing assessments and aid efforts despite significant challenges in the region.

Tropical Cyclone Jude struck Mozambique early Monday morning in the Mossuril district, resulting in at least 14 fatalities, 60 injuries, and impacting over 100,000 individuals across several provinces, including Tete, Manica, and Niassa. The IOM reports that the emergency kits contain essential supplies such as mats, mosquito nets, blankets, and tarpaulins.

The need for urgent support is critical, as government data reveal substantial infrastructural damage; 30 health centers have been destroyed, and nearly 20,000 families have been directly affected. Additionally, over 20,000 homes have been partially or completely damaged, along with 59 schools impacting approximately 17,401 students.

Mozambique is currently enduring its rainy season, which spans from October to April. This season has already seen the impacts of cyclones Chido and Dikeledi, with both causing significant disruptions between December and January, deeply affecting Cabo Delgado and Nampula.

Historically, Mozambique has faced considerable challenges due to extreme weather; from 2019 to 2023, severe events like cyclones have claimed more than 1,016 lives and impacted about 4.9 million people, reflecting the vulnerability of the country to climate extremes. Mozambique is frequently subjected to floods and cyclones during the rainy season, alongside prolonged droughts, highlighting its exposure to climate change hazards.

The distribution of emergency kits by the IOM represents a critical step in addressing the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Jude in Mozambique. With significant loss of life, injuries, and damage to infrastructure, immediate assistance is essential. The ongoing rainy season exacerbates these challenges, hence the urgent need for continued support amid increasing climate-related disasters in the region.
