A group of women protested in Benin City following the murder of Success Izekor, a pregnant housewife killed by her husband. The protesters called for justice amidst rising domestic violence cases, expressing concern over the potential for the accused to evade punishment due to claims of mental illness. Local police have confirmed the murder and promised a thorough investigation.

In Benin City, women from the Concerned Market Women group held a peaceful protest on Monday to denounce the murder of Success Izekor, a 38-year-old housewife, allegedly killed by her husband, Kelvin Izekor. Success, who was four months pregnant, was reportedly stabbed to death at their home on February 22, 2025, raising alarms about the rising domestic violence against women in the region.

Protesters carried placards emphasizing their demand for justice, echoing the sentiments of Odion Asemota, a representative of the group. She highlighted the situation surrounding Success’s murder, stating that despite Kelvin Izekor facing trial, his mother allegedly claimed he would evade conviction on mental health grounds. Asemota expressed concern about this potential defense, emphasizing the brutal nature of the crime committed just eight months into their marriage.

The incident was confirmed by the Edo State Police Command, which detailed the events following the murder. A police spokesperson, Moses Yamu, reported that Kelvin Izekor was apprehended before being lynched by an angry mob. Police found Success’s body with severe injuries, and despite attempts to save her, she was declared dead at the hospital shortly after.

This tragic murder has ignited protests and calls for justice, highlighting the urgent need to address domestic violence in Benin City and beyond. Advocacy groups like the Concerned Market Women are urging the government to take decisive action against such violence and support affected families. The local police have committed to a thorough investigation to ensure accountability and justice for victims.
