MAN Engines Ordered for Svitzer Tug Newbuilds in China

Cheoy Lee Shipyards has contracted MAN Energy Solutions for eight 12-cylinder 175D-MM engines for four TRAnsverse tugs being built for Svitzer in Zhuhai, China. The engines, rated at 2,400 kW each, focus on efficiency and eco-friendliness. Delivery is slated for 2025-2026, with tugs capable of impressive performance metrics.
Cheoy Lee Shipyards has entered a contract with MAN Energy Solutions to supply high-speed, four-stroke marine engines for a series of tugboats designated for Svitzer. The construction of these tugs will occur at the Hin Lee Shipyard in Zhuhai, China, with a total of four TRAnsverse 2900 design harbor tugs, developed in collaboration with Robert Allan Ltd, featuring a combined power output of 4,800 kW.
The order includes eight MAN 175D-MM marine propulsion engines, each with 12 cylinders arranged in a V-formation, with two engines per tugboat. Each engine is rated at 2,400 kW, and they will be manufactured in Frederikshavn, Denmark, scheduled for delivery to the shipyard in 2025.
Florian Keiler, head of high-speed engines at MAN Energy Solutions, highlights the advantages of having powerful 12-cylinder engines for harbor operations. He notes that the MAN 175D engine is perfectly suited for demanding applications, emphasizing its compact design, performance, and cost efficiency as critical features.
In addition to efficiency, Mr. Keiler pointed out that the 175D engines are eco-friendly, designed for low fuel consumption. They can be equipped with advanced exhaust gas aftertreatment systems, ensuring compliance with the latest marine emissions regulations. Furthermore, these engines are compatible with biofuels such as fatty acid methyl esters and hydrogenated vegetable oils.
Cheoy Lee anticipates delivering the four newly constructed TRAnsverse tugs to Svitzer between the third quarter of 2025 and mid-2026. These 29-meter tugs are expected to achieve a bollard pull of up to 80 tonnes, a maximum speed of 13 knots, and a side-stepping speed of 8 knots, enhancing Svitzer’s operational capabilities within its global fleet.
In summary, Cheoy Lee Shipyards has contracted MAN Energy Solutions to provide high-speed engines for Svitzer’s new tugboats. The order consists of eight 175D-MM engines designed for efficient performance and eco-friendliness. Deliveries are expected between 2025 and 2026, and the tugs will significantly enhance Svitzer’s operational fleet with remarkable performance specifications.
