Theresa Chenjerai, 49, is arrested in Zimbabwe for allegedly trying to facilitate the release of armed robbers from jail and hiding them. She, alongside Munyaradzi Zakkaria, faces bribery charges after attempting to influence a detective regarding a robbery case. Both individuals are suspected of forming a criminal gang that threatens public safety.

Police in Zimbabwe have arrested Theresa Chenjerai, 49, who is accused of orchestrating the release of armed robbers from prison and hiding them at her residence. Chenjerai was taken into custody on charges of bribery after allegedly cooperating with robbery suspect Munyaradzi Zakkaria to offer a detective US$150 to testify favorably for their accomplice, Nickson Tapuwa Mazaranye, who faces multiple robbery counts at Norton Magistrates Court.

During their arraignment at a Norton magistrate’s court on Saturday, Chenjerai and Zakkaria were not required to enter a plea. They have been remanded in custody until March 3, where a bail application will be discussed. The police suggest that Chenjerai, who is married to another suspected robber, Andrew Chenjerai, is complicit in facilitating the release of other criminals and poses a threat to public safety.

Andrew Chenjerai, who is currently out on bail facing charges of armed robbery, is believed to have orchestrated his release in collaboration with Theresa. The police allege that both Theresa and Zakkaria have the potential to disrupt ongoing investigations and hinder justice due to their involvement in organized crime, particularly following their bribery attempt involving a police official.

On February 27, the duo approached Detective Sergeant Kwashira with the bribe in an attempt to influence the outcome of Mazaranye’s court case. Following this encounter, the detective informed his superior, leading to a surveillance operation that culminated in Zakkaria’s arrest when he allegedly presented the bribe money. Further investigations indicated a collaborative effort between Chenjerai and Zakkaria, which was supported by their communication records.

The case against Theresa and Munyaradzi Zakkaria highlights serious allegations of corruption and conspiracy related to organized crime in Zimbabwe. With the potential for further disruption to law enforcement operations evident from their actions, authorities are pushing for strict measures that would prevent these individuals from hindering justice or continuing their criminal activities until their trial.
